Radiation Oncology at the John B. Amos Cancer Center
Quality Cancer Care with Advanced Technology
Led by board-certified radiation oncologists, the Radiation Oncology Clinic is fully-equipped with some of the most impressive treatment and diagnostic technology available.
Here are some examples:
-
A Linear Accelerator suite houses three units to deliver Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).
-
A Computerized Tomography (CT) simulator is used for treatment planning.
-
Multileaf Collimators act as miniature shields that protect normal tissue and allow for faster patient treatment time.
-
A B-mode Acquisition and Targeting (BAT) Tracking System allows physicians to locate tumors that may have shifted slightly since the previous day’s treatment.
-
And specialty procedures such as Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Brachytherapy are also performed at the Center.
Radiation Oncology Patient Information
Patient Scheduling
Radiation treatments are given daily, Monday through Friday. You will be asked to come at the same time each day for the required number of weeks and to see the doctor once a week to check treatment progress. Please try to avoid any changes to your schedule during this time. Promptness is essential.
After-Hours Assistance
If you need assistance after regular clinic hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.), call the answering service at (706) 320-8700, and ask to speak with your doctor. Your doctor or the doctor on call will return your call. If you have an emergency, such as difficulty breathing or unusually rapid heart rate, call 911, or go to the emergency room.
Sick Visits
During regular clinic hours, our nursing staff should be notified of problems. Any radiation side effects will be evaluated and treated by the radiation oncologist.
