About The Medical Center
Welcome to The Medical Center
On behalf of The Medical Center’s medical staff, employees and volunteers, welcome to our website. The Medical Center traces its roots back to 1836 when the local hospital was a small wooden building on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Today, our 413-bed acute care hospital in Columbus, Georgia, meets the health and medical needs of a diverse community with a wide array of services, many of which are available nowhere else in the region. As one of only six regional perinatal centers in the region, The Medical Center is entrusted with the care of infants from 27 Georgia and Alabama counties. The Medical Center also provides advanced emergency services across 13 Georgia counties as a Level 2 trauma center, and a comprehensive range of rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech recovery.
The John B. Amos Cancer Center is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary cancer center accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons – the only treatment center to be so named in the Columbus, Georgia service area.
The Children’s Hospital at The Medical Center serves women across their life span and children from birth through age 21 in an exceptional manner. The Medical Center currently serves as one of only six regional perinatal centers in Georgia, providing critical care to infants from 21 surrounding counties. Both the High Risk Nursery (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and Special Care Nursery are equipped to provide an advanced level of treatment. The Medical Center also is home to the region’s only dedicated pediatric program, including a full-service Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The special needs of children and their families are addressed through unique décor designed to put children at ease, private and semi-private rooms, specialized rooms for oncology patients, and amenities for family members. A child life specialist eases the trauma a hospital visit can cause for a child or family.
The Medical Center has been home to the Family Medicine Residency Program since 1972. The nationally recognized program, which was the first of its kind in Georgia and one of the first in the Southeast, has graduated more than 300 family physicians. Our goal is to provide information on this site that will make your visit with us the most positive experience possible. If you have further questions or needs, please do not hesitate to contact us. We welcome the opportunity to care for you and your family.
