Preparing a surgical patient includes the removal of hair at and around the incision site using electric clippers or hair removal cream.

Why is it important?
Hair must be removed prior to incision. Research has shown that shaving with a razor may increase the risk of skin abrasions and lead to infection, therefore electric clippers and hair removal cream are the appropriate methods to use.

This measure is used to determine the percentage of surgical patients that received the appropriate method of hair removal.
