The following is a summary of the many benefits available to our Resident Physician house staff. Benefit information is covered in depth during orientation sessions.

MEDICAL EDUCATION BENEFITS
We try to keep salaries commensurate with other Family Medicine residency programs in the region and in line with the quality of services that you are expected to provide. Remember, also, that the total worth of your employment package extends well beyond the salary alone. Please contact us if you need more information. For the academic year 2010-2011, our resident physician salaries will be:
PGY I - $51,000.00
PGY II - $52,000.00
PGY III - $53,000.00
Health Coverage - There are four cost-effective and comprehensive health plans offered to you by Columbus Regional. Family coverage is certainly available, if desired, at a reasonable cost. Conversely, single coverage for the resident only is, also, available. Our plan is part of a preferred caregiver organization designed to provide quality health care. Additional choices within this insurance plan will allow you to see physicians outside the network.
Dental Coverage - Two dental plans are available to eligible employees. It provides 100% coverage for preventive services with no deductible to encourage regular checkups and cleanings. Both plans allow for more comprehensive coverage, including fillings, extractions, and orthodontics.
Vision - A stand-alone vision plan through Spectera is available with our insurance plan, provided you enroll.
Life Insurance - Free basic life insurance equivalent to 1.5 X your annual salary is provided to help protect you and your family against financial problems in the event of your death. In addition to the amount of life insurance provided by Columbus Regional, you may purchase additional coverage for yourself up to five times (5 X) your annual salary in Optional Life Insurance on an after tax basis. Dependent Life Insurance and Supplemental Life Insurance, through Unum Insurance Company, and Term and Universal Life Insurance, may also be purchased as your family’s needs change over time.
Long Term Care Insurance – Columbus Regional offers resident physicians and their families the option to purchase Long Term Care insurance. This benefit provides financial protection from high costs associated with long term care either at home or in a facility.
AFLAC Supplemental Insurance – Columbus Regional offers Aflac Supplemental Insurance products that can benefit you and your family in case of an accident or illness. Aflac offers Personal Accident Indemnity, Hospital Confinement Indemnity plans, Cancer Indemnity Insurance policies and more.
Short-Term Disability Insurance – Available as an employee-paid benefit, Short Term Disability is designed to provide income protection for residents who experience an extended illness or disability covered by the Plan. Various elimination periods are available and benefits lasting up to 26 weeks may be accessed. Weekly benefits may be up to 60% of your salary.
Long Term Disability Insurance – Long Term Disability Insurance is provided for all full-time employees of Columbus Regional. You automatically become enrolled in this plan on the first day of active full-time employment. If you should become disabled, as outlined in the policy, you will be eligible for 60% of your basic monthly earnings. Benefits begin after you have been disabled for 180 days. If you are permanently disabled, the plan pays benefits until age 65 and will be offset by benefits received from any other government or hospital sponsored benefit plan.
Social Security - Retirement, medical insurance, and disability insurance benefits are provided by the federal government Social Security Program in line with state and federal laws.

VACATION & TIME OFF
Columbus Regional recognizes the importance of time off for vacation, illness, future job interviews, and other life events that require time away from work. Upon your hire, you will be eligible to access Paid Time Off (PTO). As a resident physician, you are allowed twenty-seven (27) PTO days per academic year. Extended Illness Bank (EIB) is an employee paid leave benefit which is a separate bank of time that accrues at a predetermined rate. Once your probationary employment period is completed, EIB accrual may be up to 40 hours per year.
Designated Days of Reduced Operations (Holidays)
Columbus Regional observes the following six (6) holidays. These holidays are official days of reduced operation:
New Year’s Day
Additional PTO may be granted if you are called for Jury Duty or for Bereavement Leave in the event of a death in your immediate family.

LEAVES of ABSENCE
Family and Medical Leave - Columbus Regional follows the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 granting you up to 12 weeks of leave in a 12-month period for qualifying reasons under FMLA.
Personal Leave – A leave of absence may be taken for a variety of personal reasons other than medical, childbirth/adoption, educational or military. It is the Director of Medical Education’s discretion whether to grant a personal leave of absence.
Military Leave – You may request a Leave of Absence if you are called to Active Duty in the United States Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves. Voluntary enlistment during periods of war and other national emergencies are also covered by this policy. Additional information is available in the Human Resources Department.
Educational Leave - All Family Medicine Residency programs work under the American Board of Family Medicine guidelines for absences that limit you to 30 days off per year for any and all reasons. Time off beyond that will delay your graduation. Please see our Department of Medical Education Policy and Procedure Manual for more information.

MEDICAL EDUCATION BENEFITS
Resident physicians are allocated up to $2000.00 for Continuing Medical Education purposes (to include tuition, travel, and per diem) each academic year. Every resident is provided the opportunity to complete training and certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics, and Advanced Trauma Life Support as a benefit of training at Columbus Regional.
Columbus Regional will pay for your Georgia State Temporary Training License, USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Part 3, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) licensure, and your Georgia State Medical License, if obtained while in the residency program.
Malpractice Insurance - Professional liability insurance, including “tail coverage”, is provided for the resident physician while employed by Columbus Regional and eengaged in program related activities.
Book Allowance – You are allocated up to $250.00 each academic year as a stipend to purchase medical textbooks or related materials.
Annual Residency Retreat – Residents and their families are invited to our annual residency retreat (most recently held in Panama City Beach, Florida) at no loss of vacation or PTO time. Cost of the Retreat is subsidized by the Department of Medical Education.
Attendance at the Annual Georgia State Medical Fair – This weekend Medical Fair, held in an upscale Atlanta hotel/convention and shopping center, affords you the opportunity to meet with potential employers and future sites in which to practice throughout the state of Georgia.
Relocation Expenses – Columbus Regional will pay up to $1000.00 for reimbursable relocation expenses for you and your family as you locate to the Columbus area.
Access to Employment Opportunities within the Columbus Regional Network – Our professional Physician Recruiting/Professional Development Department will be available to assist you in finding job placement, if your future practice plans may include the Columbus area.
Meals are provided to our resident physicians at no charge, either through our voucher system in the Medical Center’s expansive cafeteria, or during routine lunch and breakfast hours in the hospital’s Private Physicians’ Lounge.
Free, Secure Parking – Parking for resident physicians is made available in the Private Physician’s Parking Lot with covered access to the hospital, as well as in adjacent lots. Ample parking is available to resident physicians adjacent both to the Family Medicine Center and the Department of Medical Education offices.
Call Quarters – The resident call quarters have been recently renovated and provide a safe, secure, comfortable, and family-friendly environment for studying, resting, and catching up with your loved ones.
Simon Schwob Memorial Medical Library – The Library is available 24 hours a day and is conveniently located on the floor directly beneath your Call Quarters. Our full-time Medical Librarian, who has her Master’s degree in Library Science and Information Services, is available to assist you in your on-line searches and to help you in researching solutions to patient problems. Library services include, in addition to the standard books, medical texts, and periodicals, access to Interlibrary loans, Database searching, Research development, GaIN (Georgia Interactive Network),Up-To-Date, STAT!Ref, MicroMedex, Ovid, Medline Plus, Natural Medicine Database, MD Consult, National Allied Health Collection, PubMed, MedCat, Access Medicine, and numerous electronic textbooks and electronic journals.
