Larry Sanders, FACHE

Larry Sanders joined The Medical Center in 1981 as vice president, was named executive vice president and COO in 1983, and was appointed chief executive officer of The Medical Center and executive vice president and COO of Columbus Regional after its formation in 1986. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and earned his master’s degree in health and hospital administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and is immediate past chairman of the ACHE, an international professional organization with nearly 30,000 members.

Lance Duke joined Columbus Regional in 1993 as president and CEO of Phenix Regional Hospital. He was named president and CEO of The Medical Center in 1995 and served in dual leadership roles until Phenix Regional closed in 2002. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and master’s degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has the distinction of being named ACHE Young Administrator of the Year in two states: Mississippi and Alabama. He also received Modern Healthcare’s Up & Comer Award. 

Douglas Colburn
Vice President and Chief Information Officer

Columbus Regional Healthcare System

Doug Colburn joined Columbus Regional in July 2010 as Chief Information Officer. He comes to Columbus from the Nebraska Heart Institute and Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. He began as director of Information Technology at the Institute and was promoted to CIO following the construction of the physician-owned hospital. Mr. Colburn is a graduate of Union College where he received a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems with a pre-medical school emphasis. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in healthcare administration.  

Donald E. Elder

Don Elder joined The Medical Center in 1983 as director of financial services. In 1985 he was named director of administrative services, in 1986 he was named vice president of The Medical Center, in 1990 he was named senior vice president of The Medical Center, in 1992 he was appointed president and CEO of Columbus Ambulatory Healthcare Services Inc., and in 1995 he was named senior vice president of Columbus Regional. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Georgia State University. 

Mike Hill
Chief Executive Officer

Evergreen Medical Group LLC

Mike Hill began his career with Columbus Regional in 1994 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He served as Chief Operations Officer for Evergreen from January of 1997 and was elected Chief Executive Officer in early 1998. Prior to his career with Columbus Regional, Mr. Hill worked with Southern Bell for 31 years until his retirement in December 1994 as District Manager. He is a graduate of Columbus State University with a degree in political science. Mr. Hill has been very active in leadership roles with numerous community and civic activities.
 
D. Wayne Joiner
Senior Vice President, Human Resources

Wayne Joiner was appointed to his current role in November 2008. Previously, he had served as Vice President from March 1990 to November 2008 and Assistant Vice President since 1987. He served as Assistant Director of Human Resources for The Medical Center from 1983-1985 and as director of Human Resources from 1985-1987. He joined the staff of The Medical Center in 1981 as an employment specialist. Mr. Joiner is a graduate of Columbus State University and holds a master's degree in personnel management from Troy State University.  

Brian D. Laverty
Vice President

Brian Laverty joined Columbus Regional in 1989 as Assistant Vice President of Construction Management and was promoted in 1991 to Vice President, Planning and Development. From 1986 to 1989, he was employed by ServiceMaster Southeast Management Services and served as the Director of Facilities Management for The Medical Center. He is a graduate of Iona College and holds a bachelor's degree in construction and facilities management. He is a member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering and The International Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives Inc.
 
L.M. “Tripp” Layfield III
Senior Vice President and General Counsel

Tripp Layfield joined Columbus Regional as director of legal services in 2002. He was appointed vice president and general counsel in 2003 and to his current position in 2008. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Auburn University and spent five years in Washington, D.C., as a political appointee in the Reagan and Bush administrations. He earned his law degree form Mercer University Law School in Macon, Ga., and returned to Columbus to practice law in 1995. He is admitted to practice before the Bars of Georgia, Alabama and the District of Columbia. 

Andrew Morley Jr., M.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Andrew Morley joined Columbus Regional in 2004. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations for PROMINA Health System in Atlanta. Dr. Morley’s responsibilities include medical staff affairs, quality and risk management and the Community Healthcare Network. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Morley is active in several professional societies, including the American Academy of Family Practice, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and the Medical Association of Georgia.
 
Kevin Sass, FACHE
Senior Executive Officer
Doctors Hospital
 
Kevin Sass was appointed to his current position in July 2008. He has served as vice president of Professional Services at The Medical Center since 1998. Prior to that, he was vice president of Physician Services at Columbus Regional, and assistant vice president of Columbus Regional and executive director of the Community Healthcare Network. He was an administrative resident with Columbus Regional from 1992-1993. Mr. Sass earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Middle Tennessee State University and master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

John Sims, FACHE
Senior Vice President

Columbus Regional Healthcare System

John Sims has over 30 years experience in skilled nursing and long-term care. He holds a bachelor's degree from Emory University and a master's degree in aging from the University of North Texas. Mr. Sims is also a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a past chairman of the Georgia Healthcare Association, a long-term care organization. Mr. Sims held a senior management position at Columbus Regional from 1996-2001 and rejoined the organization in 2008.

Roland L. Thacker
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Roland Thacker joined Columbus Regional in 1995 as CFO for the Hospital Division. Reorganization of the financial staff occurred in 1996 and he was given responsibility for financial operations of the health system. Before joining Columbus Regional he spent 13 years with Columbia/HCA in various hospital financial positions. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Georgia Southwestern State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Valdosta State University, also in Georgia. He is an advanced member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. 
 
Thomas M. Titus

Tom Titus joined The Medical Center as director of community relations in 1974, was named director of public affairs in 1979, vice president of planning and development in 1983, vice president of Columbus Regional in 1986 and senior vice president in 1991. He is responsible for all marketing and public relations activities of the organization and is the senior leader for the Columbus Regional Medical Foundation. He is a former TV news reporter at stations in Columbus, Savannah, Ga., and Gainesville, Florida. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and master’s degree from Georgia State University.
 
James R. “Butch” Wheeler, FACHE

Butch Wheeler was appointed to his current position in October 2008. Mr. Wheeler joined Columbus Regional in 1986 as director of practice management, was named vice president of Columbus Healthcare Resources Inc., in 1987 and vice president of The Medical Center in 1988. He was appointed administrator of Phenix Regional Hospital in 1997. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tennessee Tech University and master’s degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
