2009 Awards
Auxiliary Wins State Award - The Medical Center Auxiliary won a 2009 Best Practice Award for its Calls from the Heart program from the Georgia Society of Directors of Volunteer Services, an affiliate of the Georgia Hospital Association. The Medical Center Auxiliary, in cooperation with Nursing Administration, established the volunteer program in 2007 to assist in the hospital’s Congestive Heart Failure outpatient education program.
Reducing Risk of Hypothermia - Hughston Hospital won a second place Partnership for Health and Accountability Quality and Patient Safety Award for its project, Reducing Hypothermia during the Perioperative Period. The award recognizes healthcare organizations for achievement in reducing the risk of medical errors and improving patient safety and medical outcomes.
Lifetime Achievement Award - Dr. Louis Levy, The Medical Center’s director of Newborn Services, was recognized as the 2008 recipient of Georgia Hospital Association’s Lifetime Heroic Achievement Award. Called by some the father of neonatal medicine for our state, he has been at the forefront of neonatal medicine almost since the day the subspecialty of neonatology emerged.
He was one of the first neonatologists to practice in Georgia and has been a pioneer in this specialized field of medicine. In 1974, then-Governor Jimmy Carter appointed him to the governor’s Council for Maternal and Infant Health of the State of Georgia. This council developed the standards of care for hospital nurseries and a coordinated plan for regional perinatal centers across the state, including one at The Medical Center.
Through his leadership, The Medical Center’s Newborn Services program has grown from a small room with a few bassinettes into a Level III nursery with 28 beds and a Level II nursery with 12 beds. The Medical Center has the only Level III maternal-infant service in the region and services 22 counties in predominantly rural Southwest Georgia through its Regional Perinatal Referral Center.
Organ Donations - The Medical Center received the Health Resources and Services Administration Award given to hospitals for excellence in organ and tissue donations. The award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is given to hospitals maintaining at least a 75 percent conversion rate of turning potential donors into actual donors.
HosPAC Recognition - Georgia Hospital Association’s political action committee, HosPAC, once again recognized Columbus Regional as an award winner in its annual giving campaign. Columbus Regional received an award for exceeding its HosPAC goal by the largest percentage in the above 400-bed organization category. HosPAC is used in building bridges needed to be successful advocates for the health and welfare of the public through the development of better hospital care for all of Georgia’s citizens.
2008 Awards
National Award - The Medical Center was named a winner of the 2008 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence based on outstanding clinical performance in the area of acute myocardial infarction, or AMI. For the noted time period, The Medical Center delivered ‘perfect care,’ a term used when 100 percent of patients are given 100 percent t of the quality measures that have been determined as best practice for the management of heart attacks. The Medical Center was one of 16 VHA member hospitals nationwide to receive the award.
Quality Honor Roll - The Medical Center was one of 23 hospitals named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Quality Honor Roll. The award is based on clinical data provided by the federal Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). The CMS data details how well a hospital’s caregivers adhere to a list of 10 Appropriate Care Measures known to be the most effective methods of treatment for patients who have suffered heart attacks, heart failure or pneumonia.
Cancer Data Award - The Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Registry recognized the John B. Amos Cancer Center with its Blue Ribbon Award for excellence in cancer data reporting. The John B. Amos Cancer Center was one of nine facilities in Georgia to have reported 100 percent of their cases for the previous year.
Auxiliary’s Top Award - Nancy Williams, ASDVS, received the Director of the Year Award from the Council on Auxiliaries/Volunteers of the Georgia Hospital Association. Ms. Williams has been director of The Medical Center’s Auxiliary for 19 years and employed at Columbus Regional for 28 years.
Pharmacy Excellence - The Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (GSHP) presented awards at its fall meeting to several Columbus Regional pharmacy staff. Dr. Mandy Mock received the Outstanding Young Health-System Pharmacist Award. Dr. Burnis Breland was awarded the Community Service Award. Dr. Breland also received the Best Paper Describing a New Pharmaceutical Care Service Award. Stephanie Dollar and Patricia Beltz, CPhT, were dually awarded the Outstanding Health-System Pharmacy Technician Award. Dr. Lisa Boothby and Dr. Breland are editors of Columbus Regional’s Pharmacy newsletter, which earned the Outstanding Hospital and Health-System Pharmacy Newsletter Award.

Cancer Society Award - The John B. Amos Cancer Center was awarded the Society Award by the American Cancer Society for its significant contributions to the Crystal Ball and continued support of the organization. The Crystal Ball is held annually to raise funds for cancer research and education.
2007 Awards
International Representation - Frances Stuckwisch, NP-C, APRN, AOCNP, MN, a nurse practitioner for Dr. David McIntosh at the John B. Amos Cancer Center, was chosen to serve on the board of an international organization of nurses and health professionals dedicated to advancing patient care, education and research in the field of gynecologic oncology and women’s health care. Ms. Stuckwisch is one of two at-large members on the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists (SGNO) board of directors.
Nationally Selected - Regional Hope Pharmacy’s Sheree W. Tolbert, Pharm.D., was one of only eight pharmacists nationwide selected to participate in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation’s 2006-2007 Oncology Patient Care Traineeship. The training took place at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Regional Hope Pharmacy is located in the John B. Amos Cancer Center.
National Award - Burnis D. Breland, Pharm.D., director of pharmacy, clinical research and pharmacy residency programs at Columbus Regional and clinical professor of pharmacy practice at Auburn University, was named recipient of the John W. Webb Lecture Award. This prestigious recognition is a collaboration of the American Society of Health- System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Northeastern University School of Pharmacy, part of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences.
Pharmacy Excellence - The Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (GSHP) presented awards at its fall meeting to several Columbus Regional pharmacy staff. Lynn Stevenson, Pharm.D., Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy coordinator, received the Outstanding Community Service Award. Glover Austin, CPhT, received the Outstanding Health-System Technician Award. Dr. Lisa Boothby and Dr. Burnis D. Breland are editors of Columbus Regional’s pharmacy newsletter, which earned the Outstanding Health System Newsletter Award.
Patient Care Award - Columbus Regional’s Family Health Pharmacy, located in the Family Practice Center, was nationally recognized with a Patient Care Award from MemberHealth Inc. One of five pharmacies recognized for its patient care, it is among 61,000 pharmacies in MemberHealth’s network. With five pharmacists and five technicians, the Family Health Pharmacy fills approximately 400 prescriptions a day.
State Recognition - The Georgia Society of Directors of Volunteer Services awarded the sibling class, Hey, What About Me?, the 2007 Volunteer Program Excellence Award in Community Outreach. The program is coordinated by The Medical Center Auxiliary.
