Kameron Paige Chosen 2008 Champion for Children’s Miracle Network
At a surprise assembly surrounded by his fellow Richards Middle School students, faculty, family, friends and the hospital staff who cared for him, 13-year old Kameron Paige was announced as the Georgia ambassador for the Champions Across America program, presented by Children’s Miracle Network and CO-OP Financial Services.
Earlier this year, Kameron was involved in a bicycle accident that resulted in severe head and chest injuries. He suffered multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a punctured lung and fractured vertebrae. He was transported to The Medical Center’s Level 2 Trauma Center where he stayed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for several weeks. The good news is that today, after physical, speech and occupational therapy, Kameron has become one of the miracle children of the Children’s Miracle Network at The Medical Center.
Medical Center President and CEO Lance Duke introduced numerous community supporters at the assembly in the school gymnasium who then presented Kameron with tokens of admiration for his courage and positive attitude during and after his ordeal. To cap off the ceremony, Columbus Mayor Jim Wetherington proclaimed Nov. 30, 2007, as Kameron Paige Day.
Kameron was also presented with a $1,000 savings bond by CB&T President Steve Melton and a $500 shopping spree from Wal-Mart’s Bill Abercrombie. Special gifts also came from Carmike Cinemas, Safe Kids Columbus and Fort Benning, where his mother Shawana works at Martin Army Community Hospital.
Champions Across America honors remarkable children like Kameron who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges. Each year, one child from each state is selected as an ambassador for the 17 million children treated annually at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals like The Medical Center.
As Georgia’s 2008 Champion, Kameron traveled to Washington, D.C. in March and joined 49 other young ambassadors across the country who met with local and national leaders to share their amazing stories. He also traveled to Walt Disney World to participate in the annual Children's Miracle Network Celebration.

The Celebrity Classic has grown to become one of the region’s premier fundraising events. Hosted by the Columbus Regional Medical Foundation and presented by Synovus Financial Corporation, the 2008 Celebrity Classic raised approximately $215,000 for the John B. Amos Cancer Center. Participants enjoyed tennis, golf, bike rides and running events as well as tennis clinics by Peter Burwash International pros and a junior golf clinic by golf pro Larry Mize. |
